This beat the monday's comes from one of my favorite Saturday Night Live episodes I've seen recently, when Ben Stiller was a host. Foster the People preformed and made me actually appreciate their music more because of how great they were live. I think this band stands out from the typical hipster indie music we see saturating the airwaves because of the lead singer's unique voice and their on stage presence. Fall is Finally Here!

It's been a dull, flat summer here on the Central Coast...which is probably why I spent most of my time traveling to waves, that is until last week. I almost forgot what it was like to chase the swell here in my home town. We had a magical beginning to the fall here with crisp clear mornings and sets rolling in which give me the opportunity to get back to my roots and to all my local friends. I may be worn down and a couple shades darker, but this is just a taste of why this was worth it!

I continue to appreciate the international exposure that the Red Bull Illume competition has allowed me. This exhibit is one of the opportunities I've been presented with since the competition and I am so disappointed I couldn't be there to see it in person. In the same format as the Illume, my photos were blown up on light boxes and displayed at a warehouse as a part of a larger photography festival in Canada. This beat the Monday is in honor of one of the best films I've seen that documents the ocean, water, and why we are drawn to it. Keith Malloy's new film Come Hell or High Water not only encompassed the passion for the sea in its imagery, but also in it's soundtrack. I strongly recommend everyone takes time to see this bodysurfing film that will be a classic for years to come. Interestingly enough some of the tunes used in the film are some past beat the monday's favorites. Here's a look at them and the trailer.

This past weekend was the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in SF. If you have never been I recommend making the pilgrimage especially if you live in California. The festival draws some of the most unique people and for those who are into people watching it doesn't get any better. Why do hundreds of thousands flock to Golden Gate Park every year? Well the festival not only is FREE, but it continually draws amazing artists. Some of the stand outs this year included Gillian Welch, Ryan Bingham, M. Ward, John Prine, Steve Earle, Jolie Holland, A.A. Bondy, and the list goes on and on. This year it was surprisingly hot in SF and good vibes and banjo tunes hummed through the air. Even though the crowds are crazy and the people crazier...you would have never seen so many smiling people in one place. So this Monday take time to look at the artist list on the Hardly Strictly webpage and begin introducing yourself to these bands. You will not be disappointed with many. Here is taste of the festival via youtube videos that do little justice to how amazing some of these bands are.

Dawes are a unique blend of americana, 60s country, and 70s singer/songwriter influences. There sound stands out among many emerging folk rock/ americana bands and is in part due to Taylor Goldsmith’s amazing singing and songwriting. With two albums out to date (North Hills & Nothing is Wrong) Dawes are a band that will only get better with time. They are currently touring all over the United States and trust me when I say they are a show not to be missed.

Beat the Mondays Vol. 29!

On first listen Beirut sounds like a Eastern European blend of part folk, pop, and hints of rock. Hailing from New Mexico the band has stemmed from lead singer Zach Condon's exploration into Balkan Folk music. East Harlem is a single from their upcoming album "The Rip Tide" coming out August 30th, and be sure to listen to the rest of their albums leading up to this release.

The Romany Rye is a band named after a novel written by George Borrow that follows a man from wealth that leaves it all and is eventually taken in by Gypsies. The Romany Rye's sound and lyrics clearly draw inspiration from the essence of writing your own future no matter how unclear it may be. Their debut album is entitled "Highway 1, Looking Back Carefully" and is the perfect album for doing just that...

Foggy days on the Central Coast with an over-hyped south swell sure do make me realize it's Summer, and also make me realize how amazing this trip was. Red Bull Illume Exhibit:Denver

On the last stop of the American tour of the Red Bull Illume Exhibit before they head back overseas, Denver was an amazing location to display this work. Not only did I seriously enjoy renting a bike to explore the town and eating some incredible food, but I spent my time in those two days doing early AM radio show interviews, meeting with the Denver Red Bull crew, and showing my face for a few hours at the exhibition. I thought I would share some of the coverage from the exhibit and express my appreciation for the continued support and exposure the Red Bull Illume has allowed me...I'm so stoked to be apart of this exhibit and am grateful to continue sharing my work through here.

The wife and I have just moved to our new casa and it is SO peaceful on this Monday morning. I can sit in the office and enjoy the morning rays, cruise to the backyard and pick some oranges or lemons from the fruit trees, or just sit on the front porch and watch the waves. Mornings like this I truly feel blessed...when I was contemplating what music may fit for such a beautiful day M.Ward popped on my playlist and his vibe is perfect for the mood. One of the best adventure documentaries to come about in recent years by far has been 180 South. This inspiring film retraces the steps of legendary mountaineers Yvonne Chouinard and Doug Tompkins in Patagonia. Jeff Johnson literally walks in their shoes and brings along some incredible friends for the journey. A big part of what makes you feel the spirit of this adventure is the music...that's why for this Beat the Monday's we are honoring an entire SOUNDTRACK. The soundtrack was scored by Modest Mouse, and includes music by James Mercer (The Shins, Broken Bells) and Isaac Brock (Modest Mouse). Chris Malloy always impresses with his cinematography and this music allows you to embrace the film even deeper.

This beat the Monday is inspired from my big 25th birthday Big Sur trip!!! The wife and I started off the day with a tsunami watch and did the smart thing and drove up the coast haha. We had an insane lunch at Sebastian's in San Simeon (I am typically vegetarian but gave myself the birthday present of Hearst Ranch beef), and then we cruised our way to Treebones Resort...one of the most beautiful places to stay in Big Sur, with incredible food and amazing water...sounds weird but their water is from their own deep water well and I couldn't get enough of it. The food is so good there that the Food Network was doing a show there so keep your eye out for Brea and I's big network debut. We stayed in the nest, the picture shows that its name fits it. Brea got us tickets to this folk concert at Fernwood so we drove up to the valley and watched one of the most entertaining shows I've seen in awhile. The Cave Singers are from Seattle, Washington, which makes sense cus most of the best music I've heard hails from there. I've had their music on constant rotation ever since we left the concert and I'm addicted to the sound and energy of their music, the lead singer was an incredibly natural performer and their guitarist had incredible skill. It's an amazing start to my Monday, and this song only seems to keep it going. It's been no secret that my wife and I love Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, the energy and the spirit of their music is addicting. When I saw the lead singer Alexander Ebert went and did some solo work, I was intrigued...and definitely not disappointed. Coming from his roots of Ima Robot, and then his soul from Edward Sharpe, Alexander's solo album is a refreshing compilation with hints of classic vintage sound.

Inspiration

Being an artist is a lot about being open to other artists and their creativity, their unique talents, and allowing other's passions to inspire you. I derive most of my inspiration from nature, God's creations etc...but every once and awhile someone's view or interpretation of nature really leaves an impression on me. The beautiful/scary thing about the internet is that you can find yourself getting lost (maybe for hours); each click taking you deeper into someone else's world, a climb I've been dying to try, a song I didn't know existed, a story pulled straight from someone's thoughts. The other night I stumbled upon something beautiful, that has stuck with me and I know I need to share it, in hopes that someone else out there getting lost in the internet will find themselves pressing play and escaping in this short film. Anyone who appreciates life, growth, and nature will truly enjoy this:

Lucky number 13 we had to find something special...and this is it. I've been following this band for the last few years, and they never cease to amaze me. I first saw them a few years back when I had my art hanging at a local venue where The White Buffalo was going to play a show...The Ragged Jubilee opened (one of their first shows I believe) and I was hooked ever since. They came along on our California Surf Project book tour down to the Hurley headquarters and blew everyone away. These guys were all born and raised in my hometown and they are hands down the best music to come out of SLO county. They've got an album out right now you won't regret investing in, you'll probably be able to consider yourselves one of the elite who had a chance to discover this band before they made it huge. I've been trying to get together with them to shoot some portraits, can't wait to make it happen.

The Ragged Jubilee are a Six piece Blues/Rock n' Roll band from San Luis Obispo, CA. HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!! 2010 was incredible, personally and professionally...I am so blessed to live the life I do with the people I love by my side. I woke up this morning to the first day of sunshine in awhile, and while enjoying the morning wake up... this song popped on, so fitting. We all get so caught up in our new years resolutions and erasing the year behind us, but I think this is a time where we should recognize where we have been, and be in the moment and love where we are. Brea and I had a chance to go to the Sasquatch Festival this year...we've been trying to make it for a few years (even had tickets before) and never made it. We made the trek to Seattle, Washington, walked the entire city, ate amazing food, drove out to the gorge, got a speeding ticket, went rock climbing, fell rock climbing, and enjoyed about 8 hours of amazing music at the best venue ever created. One of the best acts we saw was The Temper Trap, here's to another song you can't get out of your head, and won't want to.

So far this West Coast Winter weather has been nothing short of unimpressive. My solution to the swell-less blues is weekend trips to Joshua Tree. Climbing has quickly become a hobby/habit that has brought some beautiful locations into my life, Joshua Tree being one of them. Sometimes the best way to capture the scene is to pull back and get a birds eye view. PCF Aviation was kind enough to haul me up thousands of feet into the air to spend a few hours shooting the swell from above. Surfer Mag just launched a new web layout, and used my images for one of their first features. Enjoy the landscape, I know it was worth the tiny 2 seater mini-plane ride.

Traveling as much as I do, I have the opportunity to be influenced musically by everyone I share a bus, car, plane, and euro van with. This song was introduced to me by my good friend Keith Malloy on one of our Mexican adventures...it sums up the feeling of summer more than anything else. Although we are in the thick of winter, I woke up with this tune in my head and had to share. Many have covered this song, and few have done it justice besides Bon Iver and Vetiver, but I wanted to stick to the original...here's Loudon Wainwright III - "The Swimming Song"...I hope it helps you beat your Monday.

Russia and I seem to have a love/hate relationship...it all started last year with a little VISA mix up, which led to my detainment and deportation to South Korea. It's awesome to see that life comes full circle, I was approached a few months back to include my work in an art show in Moscow that will follow with a full print coffee table book. There’s a latitudinal smuggery in West Coast surfing: the higher the latitude, the more smug the surfer is toward those further south. Not everyone is prone to it, but it’s ingrained in the culture. Central Californians grumble about SoCal. North Coasters scoff at Central Coasters. And Oregonians seem to loathe all Californians (they’ll wave as you drive by with California plates, but will usually extend only one finger).

The latitudinal bias reverses at the Mexican border. At that point, decreasing latitude equals more respect. There’s also a longitudinal offshoot, wherein those at the bottom of the latitudinal pecking order save their wrath for Floridians, but that is a separate phenomenon.

Some of the latitudinal smuggery stems from the rugged conditions found further north: bigger swell, colder water, harder weather. You have to be more hardcore to paddle out. That level of commitment demands respect. But the north-south animosity runs deeper than just surfing, it’s imprinted on the California psyche (See: Heated rivalry, Giants/Dodgers; or Fresh water, lopsided distribution of).

I’ve lived and surfed from San Diego to Humboldt and many places in between. Born and raised in SoCal, but having spent most of my adult life up north, I’ve also witnessed many a rant. After years of involuntary research, I’ve concluded that the vitriol directed toward SoCal is inversely proportional to the time actually spent at the hated latitude. The more frothing the rant, the more likely the ranter hasn’t ventured far from his home coordinates.

Usually the rant will contain dark references, spoken in hushed but acrid tones, about some sprawling southern dystopia collectively referred to as “L.A.” (pretty much encompassing anywhere south of Pismo Beach). The ranter will have, over beers in a seedy bar, heard rumors about this seaside hell, wherein hordes of neon kooks grovel on tiny waves while small, malformed children splash in waterfalls of raw sewage discharging onto the sand from outfalls connected to un-stenciled storm drains.

The whole thing is pretty funny. Everyone should just lighten up. Sure, some places are better than others, but what constitutes “better” is highly subjective. Bottom line: there are epic waves and cool people up and down the state. Save the tirades for something else, like that mysterious purgatory east of the L.A. County line I’ve heard rumors about in seedy SoCal bars, a place I’ve never visited and know little about, but nonetheless refer to it darkly as “Florida” …

One of the most beautiful stretches of coast that exists in this world lies outside of the windy drive of Highway 1. Big Sur has been a magical place for me personally and professionally, since my honeymoon there in 2007 I go back every chance I get and it's proven to be an inspiring place for me photographically. Earlier this year I took a trip with Crystal Thornburg, Belinda Baggs, and Scott Soens up the coast to catch a swell in Big Sur. It proved to be a successful excursion, and I can't wait for my next escape up the coast.

Gone Too Soon

Andy Irons was known to everyone as a champion; an unstoppable fluid force to be reckoned with in the lineup. As a photographer, I have always admired Andy's style and dreamt of working with someone of his caliber. I was lucky enough to spend some time with him in Mexico, and he was everything the photos and films I had watched for years had hyped. His legacy will be his passion for the sport of surfing, and his loyalty to his family. Andy's passing leaves us all knowing and feeling, he is gone too soon. I will be sincerely praying for Andy's family, friends, and fans, and especially for his wife and baby on the way.

Heima is icelandic for home

For any of you that don't know...Iceland is one of my favorite places in the world. It is inspiring, remote, mysterious, and unique all at the same time. It just keeps pulling me back...I went 2 times this year since my first trip a few years ago. On the flight home, I turned on the screen of the chair in front of me in flight, and was blown away at the documentary Sigur Ros made of their Icelandic home tour. It captures the spirit of Iceland like no other, as it should...it is their Heima.

It was one of the most incredible nights of my life. It still feels surreal.....

I was invited to ireland for the Red Bull Illume 2010, and I came home the overall winner and the Illumination category winner.
